Niko Kovac heaps praise on Liverpool following their victory over Bayern Munich in the Champions League last 16.

The first leg ended in a dull draw and Liverpool only needed one goal to get through to the quarters. It took only 26 minutes for Sadio Mane to open the proceedings with a sublime finish.

A Joel Matip own goal saw the home side reduced the deficit Virgil van Dijk doubled the lead at the stroke of 69 minutes. Mane sealed the match with his second of the night as Liverpool progressed to the next round with flying colours.

Bayern looked unbeatable in the Bundesliga in recent weeks but they were a no match for Liverpool who dominated the Allianz Arena on Wednesday.

Kovac said, “You saw after the second goal how much quality they have.

“We still have two titles to fight for. We’re top in the Bundesliga and we’re still in the cup. Our goal is to win both of these competitions.”

Mats Hummels who also played under Jurgen Klopp hails Liverpool. “I know Jurgen Klopp and he is very good at eliminating the opponents’ strengths and he showed that again today.

“The 1-2 took away our belief. After that Liverpool was the better team. Still this was not a great game of football.”
