Former Liverpool star Patrik Berger believes that Jurgen Klopp’s side have a fair chance of winning the Premier League and the Champions League this season.
Liverpool are currently leading the Premier League table with 76 points, two points ahead of Manchester City who have a game in hand. Liverpool’s current Premier League points tally is just 14 points behind their all-time highest points tally in the league.
Beisdes the Premier League, Liverpool are also challenging for the Champions League. The Reds reached the Champions League final last season where they lost 3-1 to Real Madrid.
This season, the Reds are in the quarter-finals where they will take on Porto. Provided they reach the semi-finals of the tournament, Liverpool will take on either Manchester United or Barcelona.
Its been 12 seasons since Liverpool last won multiple titles in a single season and Patrik Berger believes the Reds can attain that feat this season.
Berger said, “They [Liverpool] can win the league and they can win the Champions League. They are in a good spot in both competitions. Porto is a very good draw for them. It’s still going to be tough but I think the boys can do it. I think they are going to do it and they will be in the semi-final of the Champions League.
Obviously in the league they have to play every game as a cup final in order to be the champions at the end of the season. I think they need to win every single game. I think they can easily win the league and they can win the Champions League too. I don’t see why they can’t win the double this season.”
Berger believes that Liverpool’s current squad has quality players in all departments. The Czech said, “We have a great goalkeeper and defensively they are not really conceding many goals. Going forward, they have (Mohamed) Salah and (Roberto) Firmino, and they are [also] really solid in the middle. The balance is really good but it’s all about scoring goals and Mane has been on fire in the last few games. It’s great that if Salah is not scoring as much as he did last season, there are other players that can score – and that’s exactly what the boys need to do.”
Liverpool’s next game is against Tottenham Hotspur next Sunday.
