Liverpool legend Steve Nicol believes that Mohamed Salah is producing good performances this season, but in spurts. The Egyptian had a dream of a first season with Liverpool, scoring 44 goals and providing 16 assists in 52 appearances across all competitions last season.

This season, however, Salah hasn’t been the same lethal scorer he was last season. In 44 appearances across all competitions, the 26-year old has scored 21 goals and has provided 10 assists.

While these numbers are pretty decent for any forward, Salah’s impact last season makes his numbers of this season look lackluster.

Salah ended an 8-match goal drought by scoring a fine goal against Southampton last weekend.

Steve Nicol believes that Salah did not look very good during the 2-0 win over Porto this week but feels that he cannot be left out. He said, “At the moment he can’t find a red jersey with a pass. And then when he has a shot, that’s the only time he’s finding a red jersey because he hit [Jordan] Henderson once and he hit [Roberto] Firmino straight in the back today as well.

But you know what, you can’t not play him. He showed us at the weekend that when he has an opportunity and he gets everything right – he’s world class. Right now, that’s only coming in spurts. But he’s got enough in the bank that he deserves to play and he should continue to play.”

Liverpool next take on Salah’s former club Chelsea on Sunday at Anfield. Salah won’t get a better opportunity to silence his critics and Jurgen Klopp will hope that he puts in a fine performance.
