Former Liverpool stalwart has hailed Joel Matip for his performances this season. The Cameroonian did not have a good start to the season as Jurgen Klopp preferred Joe Gomez. Even after Gomez’s injury in December, Dejan Lovren became Virgil van Dink’s partner in central defence as Matip sustained an injury.
However, as a matter of coincidence, when Matip became fit, Dejan Lovren became injured and with Joe Gomez out, Joel Matip became an undisputed starter under Jurgen Klopp.
Matip cashed on his opportunity pretty well as he has defended really well for Liverpool so far and.
Jurgen Klopp will most likely start Matip in the Champions League Final against Spurs and Lawrenson feels that the Cameroonians performances are the reason behind this.
Lawrenson said, “It would be tough on Matip [to not start the final]. He has been really, really good – and not just defensively. He has been a bonus because he has been coming out with the ball and committing opposition midfield players. If you’re a midfield player in that team, you’re looking at that and thinking it’s great because he’s giving you a little bit more room to play.I think it’ll be Joel Matip and Virgil van Dijk [in the final], I can’t see any other combination.”
