Manchester United legend and BT Sport pundit Rio Ferdinand was impressed by Fabinho’s performance against Bayern

Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand was impressed by what he saw from Fabinho against Bayern Munich on Tuesday night.

Liverpool played out a 0-0 draw against the Bavarians in the first leg of the Champions League last-16 tie at Anfield, leaving everything to be played for at the Allianz Arena in three weeks time.

With Virgil van Dijk suspended and Dejan Lovren not recovered in time, Jurgen Klopp was forced to play Fabinho at centre-back alongside Joel Matip, and the Brazilian came out with flying colours to nullify the threat of great Robert Lewandowski.

Ferdinand was impressed by the performance of the former Monaco man. He was quoted as saying:

“I thought he was fantastic.

“I think for any player to come into the backline in such a big game – all eyes on him – especially having to replace the talisman, the best player in Virgil van Dijk, he did an admirable job.

“I thought every question asked of him he answered well, in the right way. He was aggressive when he needed to be. ‘These kind of players are invaluable to a team; someone who can fill in, in variable positions – he can play right back, centre-half now, centre midfield.

“He scores goals and he’s having a great impact on this team. Very, very positive.”

Liverpool now turn their attention towards a massive league game away at Manchester United this Sunday.
