Former Liverpool defender and television pundit, Jamie Carragher has formed the opinion that Matthijs de Ligt could be even better than Virgil van Dijk as the Merseyside outfit draws strong links with the Ajax man.

Van Dijk can be credited with completely transforming the Reds backline after his £75m switch from Southampton eighteen months back. Now, Liverpool are readying up a similar figure to whisk De Ligt away from the Johan Cryuff Arena.

The 19-year-old has turned into a footballing sensation after the performances he put up this past season.

“Well I think he possibly will [become the world’s most expensive defender this summer],” Carragher said. “Pierre van Hooijdonk is next door doing the Dutch TV and I was just having a chat with him before.

“The feeling in Holland is De Ligt will be better than Van Dijk. Van Dijk at De Ligt’s age hadn’t even been thought about of playing for Holland.

“It took until it came to the Premier League, not even at Celtic, where he started to establish himself in the Dutch team. So what De Ligt’s doing at 19 is unbelievable.

“He actually made his debut at 17, didn’t have a great start in that game. But what I’ve watched of him at Ajax this year and also the speech he gave at the end of Ajax’s season on stage, it was like Van Dijk giving that speech.

“I do feel that young lad is something special. If the Dutch think he is going to be better than [Van Dijk], wow what a player he is going to be.”
