Virgil van Dijk has easily been the best defender across the top European leagues, according to Jamie Carragher.

Carragher played a part as Liverpool legends defeated AC Milan Glorie 3-2 in a charity match at Anfield with Steven Gerrard netting a last gasp winner. Van dijk’s contribution to Liverpool’s recent success has been immense.

The Dutch defender has single handedly solidified the Reds backline and despite injuries to players like Dejan Lovren and Joe Gomez he has encountered all the situations on his own.

Not only defending goals the former Celtic defender has been equally fluent at the other part of the pitch as he has already scored four goals this season in all competitions.

There has been a growing feeling that he might win the player of the year award which went to his fellow teammate Mohamed Salah last season. Carragher said, “With the performances he has given this year I think he’s been the best player in the Premier League. I’ll be surprised if he doesn’t win PFA Player of the Year.

“When he first signed there were maybe raised eyebrows at the amount but if somebody offered you double now you probably wouldn’t take it, that’s how good he has been.

“He is at a great age and we know centre-backs go on a bit longer, so hopefully we’ll see him for the next decade.”
