The Reds have had a turbulent campaign both in the Premier League and the Champions League. Matip started the campaign as a third choice centre back as Jurgen Klopp mostly preferred Joe Gomez and Virgil van Dijk in the heart of the Reds defence.
But untimed injuries to Gomez and Dejan Lovren paved the way for him but his stint was curtailed as he broke his collar bone in a Champions League win over Napoli.
He then came back strongly and since then has been a pivotal part of the Reds starting lineup. Matip said, “At the beginning of the season I was struggling with injuries and other lads did very well, so there was no reason to change.
“But in the second half I could play and could improve. I feel good.
“You are waiting for this. And then if you can use it, it’s not a bad feeling – it’s not the worst feeling.”
On being asked about their chances in the Champions League final he replied, “It was a great season and we can finish it. It’s the biggest game during this season and we will do everything for this.
“It will be a completely different game, but we know we can beat them and we are looking forward.”
