Reports from the Liverpool Echo claim that Jurgen Klopp nearly signed two players instead of Mohamed Salah and Georginio Wijnaldum.

Both Salah and Wijnaldum have been crucial players for Liverpool ever since joining the club. Wijnaldum joined Liverpool from Newcastle United in 2016 on a transfer fee of £23 million. So far, he has played 96 matches for the club across all competitions. The Dutchman has scored 8 goals and has provided 15 assists.

This season, he has played every minute of Liverpool’s Premier League campaign so far.

Mohamed Salah joined Liverpool from Roma last summer on a transfer fee of £43.9 million. He became the club’s first ever Egyptian player. Salah had a terrific 2017-18 season with the club, scoring 44 goals across all competitions.

This season, Salah has scored twice in four matches. Both Salah and Wijnaldum have helped Liverpool start this season strongly. The Reds have won their first four Premier League matches and lead the table as of now.

However, the duo may not have come to Anfield if Jurgen Klopp had signed two other players according to reports.

Reports claim that Klopp initially wanted to sign Polish midfielder Piotr Zielinski who was playing at Empoli on loan from Udinese.

However, Zielinski eventually signed for Napoli for whom he has played 96 matches so far. Liverpool are still interested in signing the Pole as reports have claimed that they might bid for him during the January transfer window.

Instead of Salah, Klopp initially wanted to sign Bayer Leverkusen winger Julian Brandt. However, the youngster decided not to leave Leverkusen. He still plays at the Bundesliga club. Brandt recently scored his second international goal for Germany against Peru.

Looking at Salah’s record at Liverpool so far, not signing Brandt was a good idea.

Liverpool now have two tough matches ahead. They take on Tottenham tomorrow before beginning their Champions League campaign against PSG on Tuesday.
