Jurgen Klopp wanted to sign the player
Jurgen Klopp is keen to strengthen the Liverpool squad this summer in order to compete for silverware in the upcoming season. He has already completed the signings of Fabinho, Naby Keita, Xherdan Shaqiri and are on the verge of completing the signing of Alisson Becker.
But The German coach has been exploring for creative options this summer as he is looking to find a replacement for Philippe Coutinho who left them for Barcelona this summer. Though the club fared well without him as they reached the Champions League final.
The Reds identified Lyon star Nabil Fekir as the one who can bolster their attacking options in the coming season.
The France International has spent his entire professional career at the French club and made his senior debut for them back in 2013. He has been an integral part of the team since then and has established himself as one of the best playmakers in the world.
The 24 year old enjoyed a stellar campaign this season, scoring 23 goals and assisting 9 in 40 appearances in all competitions and helping the team to qualify for Champions League next season.
The Midfielder was also selected for the France World Cup squad but didn’t start a match in the tournament. They won against Croatia in the finals to lift the trophy after 20 years.
He nearly completed a move to Anfield earlier in the summer, with an interview already done with the club’s media team, LFC TV. But a £53 million move for him fell apart at the start of June due to issues surrounding medical details.
Though there were speculations last week that the Frenchman is still keen to move to Anfield and has asked his club to open talks again.
Liverpool legend Graeme Souness has claimed that Liverpool are back in for Fekir and could complete the signing.
Souness told beIN SPORTS: “[Georginio] Wijnaldum, [James] Milner, Jordan Henderson, [Emre] Can to a lesser extent, [Alex] Oxlade-Chamberlain was a different type, but certainly those four, all workaholics, no real great, cute passers of the ball but very solid citizens.
“I think it is very interesting that he’s [Klopp] bought two [Fabinho and Naby Keita], and I hear today he is back in for Fekir.
“So that tells you he’s not happy with his midfield.
“But if you were looking at Liverpool last year, you don’t have to have too much creativity from your three midfield players when you’ve got those three front players.
“The big danger is you go for more creative players in midfield but do they give you the same level of pressing, intensity the current players offered.
“That’s one for the manager to call, very interesting though.”
