Liverpool played AC Milan in Istanbul in Turkey in 2005. The Reds had won the competition four times but hadn’t won the trophy since 1985. AC Milan had won the Champions league six times, and were appearing in then final the second final in three years.
Milan shocked Liverpool by winning 3-0 in the first-half. But all of that was to change soon after. The Reds scored three goals in the space of six minutes. Steven Gerrard lead the charge with his goal. Soon after, Vladimir Smicer and Xabi Alonso both scored to make it 3-3. The match went through to a penalty shoot-out with Andriy Shevchenko missing his penalty which meant that Liverpool won the match.
The game was dubbed “the miracle of Istanbul” and is still today regarded as one of the greatest matches of all time.
