Liverpool have been advised to offer more money than Barcelona for Matthijs de Ligt by Ajax A1 assistant manager, Ronald de Boer.

The centre-back is regarded as one of the greatest defensive prodigies in world football and top sides are clamouring to get their hands on the 19-year-old.

He was once again on display against Tottenham Hotspur last night, putting on a fitting display to justify the mammoth transfer fees that are being lined up for him. De Ligt manned the Lancers backline to a 0-1 victory at Spurs’ new stadium.

Liverpool are on the lookout for the next best way to improve their defence. Signing Virgil van Dijk for £75m turned out to be a gamechanger and there would be nothing better than to pair up his international teammate in the Reds lineup as well.

De Ligt at 19 is already the captain of this Ajax side and has made 15 appearances for the senior Holland team. Frenkie de Jong has already completed a £66m transfer to Barcelona and De Ligt seems to be on his way out of the door as well.

The question remains on which side will lucky enough to sweep him up. The youngster would enjoy teaming up with de Jong at the Camp Nou but the prospects of playing for a Premier League title contender seems prosperous as well.

De Boer said, “You can see it in front of the camera, his interviews, I’ve never seen it from a 19-year-old boy, I’ve never seen that before.

“For me, he can play in every team, if he goes to a defending or attacking team. He can play in any team because he’s so good. He can easily come to the Premier League – he can choose every team in the world.

“Frenkie de Jong went for €75million and that can go up to €85million to Barcelona. But in my opinion, De Ligt is further in his qualities and is more ready to make that step than Frenkie de Jong.

“For De Ligt, it’s up to him what he wants to do. He has to look for a team that plays attacking football and has time on the ball. Or go to a team that gives the opponent the ball and waits.

“For me [he can go to] Barcelona, Manchester City, Liverpool, Paris Saint-Germain, these teams I would advise him to go there. But I mean all the other teams, even Tottenham, they’re great teams to play for.”
