Liverpool and Barcelona are two of the biggest clubs in world football. Both these clubs have 11 Champions League titles among them. Hence it shouldn’t be much of a surprise if there are players who have played for both these clubs.

As a matter of fact, there are 8 footballers who have plied their trade at both Liverpool and Barcelona. Now, we will take a look at the players who have played for both Liverpool and Barcelona.

8. Mauricio Pellegrino- 25 appearances for Barcelona, 13 appearances for Liverpool

Current Leganes manager Mauricio Pellegrino had brief stints at Liverpool and Barcelona during his playing career.

Pellegrino spent the 1998/99 season at Barcelona on loan from boyhood club Velez Sarsfield. The centre-back made 25 appearances for Barca as they won the La Liga that season.

Following his spell at Barca, Valencia signed Pellegrino in 1999 and he spent 6 years at the club, winning three titles including a UEFA Super Cup.

Pellegrino joined Liverpool from Valencia in 2005 but made only 13 appearances under Rafa Benitez before spending the final year of his career at Alaves.

7. Jari Litmanen

Perhaps the greatest Finnish footballer of all-time, Jari Litmanen is among the players who have played for Liverpool and Barcelona.

Following a very sucessful 7-year spell at Ajax during which he won the Champions League, Litmanen signed for Barcelona in 1999. However, injuries and Litmanen’s inability to adapt to Barcelona’s culture saw him making just 32 appearances for the Blaugrana, scoring 4 goals and providing as many assists.

The Finn then joined Liverpool in 2001. He won the UEFA Super Cup and the FA Charity Shield shortly after joining the club, being an unused substitute in both matches.

Litmanen made 43 appearances for Liverpool during the 2001/02 season, scoring 9 goals and providing 4 assists. Ankle issues prevented Litmanen being a regular at Liverpool and he left the club after the one season.

6. Luis Garcia- 121 appearances for Liverpool and 38 appearances for Barcelona

Luis Garcia played in Barcelona’s youth team from 1990-1997 but found it really hard to find a place in the senior team. He joined Atletico Madrid in 2002 and after one season at the club, Garcia returned to Barcelona in 2003.

The Spaniard spent only one season at Barca, scoring 7 goals and providing 9 assists in 38 appearances across all competitions before joining Liverpool on a transfer fee of £6 million in 2004.

Garcia spent three seasons at the club, making 121 appearances across all competitions with 30 goals and 3 assists to his name.

During his spell at Anfield, Garcia won the Champions League, the UEFA Super Cup, the FA Cup and the Community Shield. Garcia also found a place in the UEFA Team of the Year in 2005.

He left Liverpool in 2007.

5.Boudewijn Zenden

Following a fine spell at PSV, Zenden joined Barcelona in 1998. Zenden made 95 appearances for Barcelona from 1998-2001, scoring 3 goals and providing 9 assists.

During his time at Barca, Zenden won the La Liga in 1998/99. Zenden left Barcelona in 2001 and following short spells at Chelsea and Middlesbrough, he joined Liverpool in 2005.

The Dutchman made only 47 appearances for Liverpool from 2005-2007, scoring 2 goals and providing an assist. He won the UEFA Super Cup and the FA Community Shield during his spell at Anfield, starting in both matches.

4. Pepe Reina

One of the finest Spanish goalkeepers of all-time, Reina was a product of Barcelona’s youth system. He broke into the senior team in 2000. However, he could not be a starter at the club due to the presence of Roberto Bonano and later, the late Robert Enke.

Reina left Barcelona and joined Villarreal. After impressing with Villarreal, Reina joined Liverpool in 2005. He won four titles with Liverpool and soon dethroned Jerzy Dudek to become the first-choice keeper at Anfield.

Reina went to make 396  appearances for Liverpool from 2005-2013, making 177 clean sheets.

3. Javier Mascherano- 334 appearances for Barcelona and 139 appearances for Liverpool

Following short spells at River Plate, Wests Ham and Corinthians, Mascherano joined Liverpool. The Argentina made 139 appearances for the Reds from 2007-2010, scoring 2 goals and providing 7 assists.

Mascherano left Liverpool to join Barcelona in 2010 on a transfer fee of €24 million. The Argentine went on to make 334 appearances for the Blaugrana, scoring a goal against Osasuna and eight assists.

While at Barcelona, Mascherano won a total of 18 trophies that included 5 La Liga titles, 2 Champions League titles, 5 Copa del Ray titles and two FIFA Club World Cup titles. The Argentina found a place in the 2014/15 Champions League Team of the Season while being named Barcelona’s Player of the season for the 2013/14 season.

Mascherano left Barcelona in 2018 to join Chinese club Hebei China Fortune where he currently plays.

2. Philippe Coutinho – 201  appearances for Liverpool and 76 appearances for Barcelona

One of the finest players in the world at this moment, Philippe established himself as a major footballing star courtesy of his performances with Liverpool.

Coutinho’s performances attracted interest from Barcelona, the club he wanted to sign. Liverpool eventually sold Coutinho to Barcelona in January, 2018 on a transfer fee of £142 million. Coutinho left Liverpool with 54 goals and 45 assists in 201 appearances across all competitions.

Coutinho hasn’t had the kind of impact on Barce many expected him to have but he has had his moments with the club so far. The Brazilian has made 76 appearances for the Blaugrana across all competitions, scoring 21 goals and providing 11 assists.

1. Luis Suarez

One of the finest strikers in world football, there’s no doubt that Suarez is the best footballer who has played for both Liverpool and Barcelona.

After impressing with Ajax, Suarez signed for Liverpool on a transfer fee of €26.5 million. Suarez did not have the best start at Liverpool but became a prolific scorer for the club from 2012. The Uruguayan striker netted 31 goals in 33 appearances for Liverpool during the 2013/14 season which won him the European Golden Shoe.

Suarez left Liverpool in 2014 to sign for Barcelona on a transfer fee of £64.98 million. The striker has done brilliantly for Barca so far, scoring 177 goals and providing 96 assists in 247 appearances across all competitions.

Suarez has won 14 trophies at Barca so far including 4 La Liga titles and a Champions League title.
