The game started amidst much excitement with the fraternity expecting Liverpool to dominate as usual. However, the first half turned out to be exactly the opposite of the expectations.

The Merseysiders were subjected to early pressure from the home side. Joel Matip found himself under intense pressure with the likes of Che Adams and Nathan Redmond constantly looking to create spaces behind his back.

Southampton’s pressing disallowed Liverpool from settling on the ball and finding the rhythm, leaving their front trio of Mane, Firmino and Salah short of adequate chances.

But, Sadio Mane’s clinical strike from just inside the penalty box ensured Jurgen Klopp’s men breathed a sigh of relief as they went into the half time with a one-goal lead.
