Retired Liverpool football players

In last 127 years, Liverpool have had many great footballers who have plied their trade at the club. There have been many players who have ended their professional careers at Liverpool.

All these players have gone down as Liverpool greats. Now, we will discuss about 5 players who retired at Liverpool.

5. Jamie Carragher

The ultimate one club man. Jamie Carragher came through the youth ranks at Liverpool. He was a young dynamic defender who played in multiple positions. The strange thing about him was that he was an Everton supporter but joined the Reds as a child. He went on to become one of the best kids in the youth academy and not before long he was noticed by first team and development team coaches.

In his development process, he was moved from midfield to forward line and finally tried in defence where he really came into his own. He went on to make his debut in 1997 where he played in the League Cup. It was against Middlesborough in the quarter final stages where he came on as a sub in the 75th minute.

Liverpool went on to lose the match 2-1. However, he did impress his boss as only three days later he was given his Premier League debut where he played the entire second half in a 0-0 draw against West Ham United.

Later in the campaign, in the last stages in one of the matches, he was pushed up to play in midfield due to late tweaks in the team. He went on to score a goal in the 3-0 win in front of the Kop end. However, it turned out to be his last contribution for the season.

Over the next season in 1997-98, Liverpool saw Carragher break into the first team as several key players like Owen, Redknapp, Fowler and Ince started playing together. They formed a brilliant team but failed to keep pace with the leaders in the pack of Arsenal and Manchester United. Carragher played various positions in the team. He played at right back, centre back and defensive midfield. In 1998-99 he won the club’s player of the year award.

Two own goals in a 3-2 loss against Manchester United saw the momentary death of Carragher’s centre back career. He was used and deployed only in right back position after that for a while.

The early 2000s saw a great spell in his career. He played at left back for the first time as Liverpool went on to win the League Cup, the FA Cup, UEFA Cup, Community Shield and the Super Cup in a matter of few months.

His disobedience story came in 2002 in a match against Arsenal, when he threw a coin tossed at him, back to the crowd. He received a red card and a formal police warning.

He had two injury plagued seasons following that and missed out on England’s trip to the World Cup in 2002. He however, was named the vice captain in 2004.

The arrival of Rafa Benitez saw Carragher return to his favored centre back position where he made 56 appearances in one season. He played as a centre back for the rest of his career.

He went on to win the historic Champions League in Istanbul. By 2008, he had made 500 appearances for Liverpool. Carragher, infamously, had scored 7 own goals by 2010, a record of its own.

In 2013, after over 700 appearances for the club, Carragher announced his retirement, stating, “It has been a privilege and honour to represent this great club for as long as I have and I am immensely proud to have done so since I was 9.”

After 737 appearances, he finally retired.

4. Kenny Dalglish

The club’s legendary forward, winner of multiple Champions League trophies and later manager of Liverpool, Dalglish also retired at the club.

He made over 350 appearances for Liverpool scoring 118 goals. By 1985, he had become player manager of the club. In 2013, he returned to Anfield as non-executive director and now has a stand named after him.

Having joined from Rangers, he was signed to replace Kevin Keegan, a job he did rather well.

3. Alan Hansen

A centre back who joined Liverpool from Partick Thistle, he made 434 appearances for the Reds. He was the last captain to lift the Premier League title for Liverpool. He was a typical ball playing centre half, something still important in the modern day game. Complimented by his commanding nature, he was one of Liverpool’s greatest ever players.

2. Billy Liddell

He was one of Liverpool’s players from over 70 years back. He was a one club in his senior career. A dangerous goal scoring winger by nature, he scored 215 goals in 492 matches for the club. He was a Red through and through, he was versatile enough to play as a winger on either side, a centre forward or a shadow striker.

1. Special Mention : Steven Gerrard

Yes, he did not retire at Liverpool but he chose not to stay in Europe and went to the US to play out of love and respect for the Anfield side. A true club legend, perhaps the greatest Red of all time, he will be remembered as a hero who saved Liverpool on numerous occasions.
