Jamie Carragher has hailed Ashley Cole as the best left back in the world.

The tribute came on the back of Cole’s announcement of retirement from football.

Announcing his decision on Sky Sports, Cole said: “After hard consideration, it’s time to hang my boots up and look towards my next chapter, which will hopefully be coaching.”

The dynamic left back started his professional career in North London with Arsenal. He won the league with the Gunners as he went on to become a member of the Invincilbles squad.

“As a young kid, I never expected to play one game or be a professional. Looking back, to be able to say I played in World Cups, Champions League finals, being lucky enough to lift Premier League titles – it’s a young kid’s dream.”

“I fulfilled my dream and now I look to the future, hopefully as a great coach.”

However, soon he chose to leave Arsenal and join their local rivals Chelsea. The left back then went on to win everything in club football including big trophies like the Champions Leagues and Europa Leagues.

Now his compatriot Carragher has hailed him as the best left back in the world, a lot of love between two men who had the intense club rivalry in their playing days.
