Alex Oxlade Chamberlain has said that Liverpool suffered a lot against Southampton in the weekend.

The Reds won the match 2-1 against the Saints. However, the players were super tired having played over 120 minutes in the UEFA Super Cup match against Chelsea followed by a shoot out.

Southampton as opposed to them had all week to play nothing. Liverpool made the journey all the way back from Istanbul having played on Wednesday to play again on Saturday.

Chamberlain who has been ruled out for the majority of last year started in the central midfield and said his time faced the heat of tired legs. However, experience prevailed for Liverpool as they went on to win the match 2-1 thanks to goals from Firmino and former Saints man Mane.

“There were moments in the game where we suffered and knew we had to improve,” Oxlade-Chamberlain told the BBC.

”We knew we would come under the cosh and had to withstand that. But, despite playing 120 minutes and all the travel, we were never going to use that as an excuse.

“We had to turn up today and prove we were raring to go and I think we did that.”
