Former Chelsea player Chris Sutton believes that midfielder Naby Keita cost Liverpool their match against West Ham earlier this week. Liverpool registered their second successive winless result as they drew 1-1 against West Ham. As a matter of the result, Liverpool have now fallen to second after Manchester City’s win against Everton last night saw them retain top spot in the League table.

Naby Keita joined Liverpool from RB Leipzig in the summer on a transfer fee of £52.7 million, becoming the club’s second highest signing at the time. So far, Keita has made 23 appearances for Jurgen Klopp’s side, registering an assist against Crystal Palace.

Keita started and played the entirety of the West Ham match, However, he didn’t have the best of outings as he was unable to fend off a move from Michail Antonio which saw Antonio scoring the equaliser for West Ham.

Sutton spoke of Keita’s performance, saying, “You can’t afford those errors. You expect more from Keita and that is the difference with Liverpool. That one error, that one moment from Keita switching off, has cost Liverpool a couple of points.

They paid a lot of money for Keita so on that basis you’re asking somebody to do their job in that moment when the free kick was materialising and it was popped to [Robert] Snodgrass and at the point he’s making the pass, Antonio had already made his run but Keita has to see that.

I don’t understand how he doesn’t see that really. It’s a poor error of judgement from a player who he invested a lot of money in!”

Liverpool will hope to get back to winning ways and retain top spot in the League table on Saturday when they host Bournemouth at Anfield.
