Diogo Jota expected to fill the gap created by Sadio Mane

Diogo Jota expected to play a big role in the upcoming season.

The Portuguese forward was the ‘forgotten man’ towards the end of last season who was an instant hit in his debut season.

Last season he netted 21 goals for the Reds but later suffered an injury in a Champions League against Inter Milan in February.

He struggled to make an impact since his return and got his gametime reduced after the arrival of Luis Diaz in January.

But now with Mane leaving for Bayern Munich, the former Wolves star is expected to re-stake claim as the centre-forward.

Darren Bent claims the Portuguese international can step up to the plate in Mane’s absence.

Bent said: “I don’t think you can replace him straight away just man-for-man because I think he’s too good. But if (Luis) Diaz gets his numbers up in terms of goals and assists and Jota’s scoring goals… He was kind of the forgotten man towards the end of last season but he stepped in and was brilliant.

“Diaz, (Roberto) Firmino’s still there and obviously (Mohamed) Salah speaks for himself, so they’ve still got so many different options in that front three area.”
