Dominik Szoboszlai opens up about Liverpool players’ reaction to Klopp’s departure

Dominik Szoboszlai has offered a glimpse into the emotional rollercoaster that unfolded inside the Liverpool dressing room when Jurgen Klopp made the bombshell announcement of his departure from the club.

Speaking exclusively to Hungarian TV channel Spiler TV, Szoboszlai shared the raw reactions of the players as they grappled with the news that their beloved manager was bidding farewell after nearly a decade at Anfield.

“On the day it came out, we had a meeting at 10:30 in the morning,” Szoboszlai said.

“What I didn’t know, but the older players who have been here for a long time told me is that in eight years he [Jurgen Klopp] hasn’t had a meeting at 10:30 in the morning. So, we were thinking maybe he was going to extend, or what was later released to the public, that he will say goodbye. Unfortunately, it was the second one.”

In the same interview, Szoboszlai said that the rest of the team initially hoped Klopp’s decision would be a joke or prank.

“But he told us then too, and then we just sat in the dressing room and everyone looked at each other to see if it was a joke or not, searching if there were cameras somewhere. There weren’t any.”

The shockwave shared not only among the fans, but also within the cohesive team, which learned of Klopp’s decision on the same day it surprised the football world. Szoboszlai’s indicate sheds light on the sad atmosphere and the tremendous impact Klopp’s departing had on everyone there.

With Klopp’s leave nearing, there has been much talk about his successor, with Ruben Amorim emerging as the leading candidate for the sought-after role. Amorim’s amazing managerial record in Portugal, including bringing Sporting CP to their first league title in over two decades, has established him as a strong possibility to succeed Klopp.

As Liverpool prepared for a new era without Klopp, Szoboszlai’s release provides a poignant glimpse into the significant link shared by the players and their departing manager, while also feeding speculation about the club’s future under potential new leadership.
