Former Liverpool captain and legend Graeme Souness has opened up on his club’s transfer strategy this summer. The Scot believes that the Merseysiders still need to reinforce themselves before the transfer window shuts down on August 8.

Jurgen Klopp’s men capped off a brilliant season with the Champions League title as they beat Tottenham 2-0 in the final game. They also amassed 97 points in the Premier League last season, losing the title to Manchester City by just a point.

Liverpool have signed only two youngsters this season – Sepo van den Berg and Harvey Elliot from PEC Zwolle and Fulham respectively. Speaking about the areas they need to bolster, Souness said,

“Sturridge is gone. They are a bit light upfront. They need a bit more creativity in midfield too.”

“The players they have in midfield are workaholics but they maybe need someone to change things up.”

Souness also played down the importance of preseason as he said,

“Pre-season is not important. It’s about getting players fit. Their season doesn’t start on Sunday, it starts next Friday.”

“The game is important but it’s all about getting through the match and preparing for the season ahead.”

“I think Liverpool and City will be battling again this season.”

Liverpool lost out to Manchester City on penalties in the Community Shield game. Before they begin their campaign against Norwich City, the Merseysiders will face Schalke kn the final game of their preseason.
