Arne Slot says Harvey Elliott ‘Could Have Done Better’ in moments during Arsenal friendly
Liverpool manager Arne Slot shared his thoughts on Harvey Elliott’s performance after the Reds’ 2-1 victory over Arsenal in a pre-season friendly in Philadelphia.
The match saw Mohamed Salah and Fabio Carvalho net goals in the first half, securing a win against last season’s Premier League runners-up.
Elliott, starting in midfield, caught the eye with his playmaking skills. He played a pivotal role in both goals, first setting up Salah in the 13th minute and later delivering a precise assist to Carvalho just before halftime.
The young midfielder also nearly added another assist to his tally, with Diogo Jota hitting the woodwork from his pass.
Despite Elliott’s standout performance, Slot had a nuanced take on the 21-year-old’s display. Speaking to Liverpool’s official website, the Dutch manager praised Elliott’s contributions but noted areas for improvement.
“He had two great assists, but the team also created these opportunities for him,” Slot remarked.
“Playing out from the back, getting him in the right positions – or another No.10. Then it’s up to him to make the most of these situations, which he did with two assists.”
Slot continued, “If I’m being a bit critical, I think there were two or three situations where he could have done better. But that’s part of the team’s effort; we ensure he and others like Mo and Fabio get into positions where they can showcase their quality. Harvey did that today with two good assists.”
Elliott’s performance statistics further highlighted his impact. In 72 minutes, he had 37 touches, completed 89% of his passes, and created three big chances, earning an 8.4/10 rating on SofaScore – the highest of the match.
As the 2024/25 season approaches, Liverpool fans eagerly anticipate more from Elliott under Slot’s guidance.
