How far has Liverpool come to signing Werner?

Jurgen Klopp has put together a crafted side at Liverpool.

Unlike City, they do not have a star-studded bench and highly depend on their 7 core players. With success coming, Liverpool were planning to build on it. Transfers for other players who are good and would fit the bill perfectly was in the works.

One star who was highly tipped to join the Reds this summer was Timo Werner. The Germany international is highly rated forward with multiple clubs chasing his signature. Werner himself admitted that he would be interested in joining Liverpool, giving the more all the more fuel it needed.

However, a tricky clause in Werner’s contract stood that stated that any club willing to get him needed to trigger his release clause by end of April after which the release clause would no longer work.

It is now a week away from April ending and with it Werner’s release clause. So how far is that move now? Leipzig CEO Mintzlaff shed some light on it.

“Neither Jurgen Klopp nor [Bayern chairman] Karl-Heinz Rummenigge contacted me.

“We are happy that we were able to extend the contract with him until 2023. He played a really strong first half of the season.

“We also believe that we are still a very good stage for Timo Werner on which to develop as a Germany international.”

It would seem Leipzig have almost won their war to keep Timo. Bad news for Liverpool though.
