Media reports have confirmed that Manchester United were on the verge of sanctioning a transfer to get Virgil Van Dijk from Southampton.
The Red Devils had Jose Mourinho in charge and they wanted to bring in defensive reinforcement in Virgil Van Dijk but Jose who had recently signed Eric Bailly and Victor Lindelof told the United scout group he did not need any one.
However, Mourinho’s mind changed a few months later when he told the United board he was not happy with the defence and wanted new players brought in. However, that was too late for them to get a move for VVD as Liverpool had already signed the player.
Virgil Van Dijk has gone on to become the world’s best defender at the moment and is in line to win the Ballon d’Or, the first defender in over a decade to win the trophy. He helped Liverpool win the Champions League and has changed the shape of Liverpool’s backline single handedly.
On the other side, Mourinho has been sacked from United and ironically the Portuguese tactician blamed United for not signing a new defender while he was in charge.
