The legendary Ian Wright of Arsenal believes that Ryan Gravenberch, a midfielder for Liverpool, has pleasantly surprised Arne Slot, the new Reds manager, this season. Luis Diaz scored three goals, and Mohamed Salah added another to help Liverpool defeat Manchester United 3-0 at Old Trafford on Sunday. Gravenberch was playing at his best.
In the end, Liverpool decided to stick with what they had rather than spend the summer trying to acquire a midfield addition to expand Slot’s options in the middle of the pitch. Martin Zubimendi was on the verge of joining the Reds during the summer transfer window, but the Spain international chose to remain with Real Sociedad and turn down the Premier League’s biggest teams.
For his former teams, Ajax and Bayern Munich, Gravenberch primarily played in an advanced role; however, so far this season, he has thrived in a deeper role for Slot’s squad.
Ian Wright singles out Liverpool star
The 23-year-old Dutchman has performed well in the deeper position thus far this Premier League season, although he had previously played in a more advanced role at Ajax and Bayern Munich. And following yet another strong performance in Liverpool’s convincing 3-0 victory over Manchester United at Old Trafford last weekend, Wright thinks Slot will be thrilled with Gravenberch’s ability to adjust to the new position.
“He is not a natural No. 6; rather, he is more of a No. 8 who wants to get forward into the box and score goals,” the former Arsenal striker stated on the Kelly and Wrighty show. “His defensive effort in that specific game was something they would have looked at and thought, “Wow.”
