Virgil van Dijk denies any progress has been made in talks over new contract

Julian Alvarez Praises Van Dijk as ‘One of the Best in the World’

Julian Alvarez, Atletico Madrid’s newest star, has hailed Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk as one of the best defenders he’s ever faced.

The Argentine forward, who moved to Madrid for a hefty €75 million this summer, reflected on his toughest opponents and didn’t hesitate to name the Liverpool captain as his top pick.

Speaking in a recent interview with ESPN, Alvarez said, “Van Dijk is incredibly strong. He’s definitely one of the best defenders in the world.”

Having faced off against the Dutchman numerous times during his stint at Manchester City, Alvarez is well-acquainted with Van Dijk’s defensive prowess.

At 33, Van Dijk continues to be a vital part of Liverpool’s backline, helping them soar to the top of the Premier League standings with five wins from six games.

His partnership with Ibrahima Konaté has solidified the Reds’ defense, which has only conceded twice in the league this season.

Despite his age, Van Dijk shows no signs of slowing down, though his future at Anfield remains uncertain.

With his contract set to expire next June, talks of a potential exit loom. Liverpool fans, however, will be hopeful their captain stays on Merseyside for the long haul.

Alvarez also named Tottenham’s Christian Romero and Manchester United’s Lisandro Martinez as the other top defenders he’s faced, but Van Dijk’s name came first without hesitation—solidifying his reputation among football’s elite.
