Julian Ward took over the sporting role at the end of last season.

Liverpool sporting director Julian Ward will resign his position at the end of this season.

He replaced former sporting director Michael Edwards last season but now is moving on due to personal reasons.

Club legend Jamie Carragher was shocked and admits it’s concerning after hearing Julian Ward’s departure.

Carragher said: ‘It’s not ideal. When you’re talking about recruiting players, a person in that role is involved not just right now for the January transfer window – you’re talking about the summer as well.

‘It does feel like a little bit of a shock and a little bit of a worry for Liverpool right now. There seems to be a lot of upheaval behind the scenes in terms of the ownership.

‘Michael Edwards has moved on, Julian Ward came in to replace him and now he’s gone as well.

‘But someone will fill that role, and hopefully they have as much success as Julian Ward and Michael Edwards have had in the past.’
