Klopp criticizes Southgate’s selection policy after Liverpool’s draw with City
Jurgen Klopp, Liverpool’s manager, criticized England manager Gareth Southgate after his team’s 1-1 tie with Manchester City.
Despite the exciting meeting at Anfield leaving the Premier League title race wide open, Klopp could not help but criticize Southgate for Liverpool defender Joe Gomez’s exclusion from the national squad.
Klopp questioned Southgate’s decision-making, especially regarding Gomez, who hasn’t played for England in over three years.
“Joe Gomez. Gareth [Southgate], honestly,” Jurgen Klopp said to Sky Sports
Despite Gomez’s strong performance against City, Klopp noted the defender’s neglect from the England squad, asking Southgate to reconsider his choices.
Gomez, who last played for England in October 2020, was unable to find a place in the national team despite his talent and prior efforts.
Klopp’s displeasure with Southgate’s selections was clear when he mentioned Gomez’s lack of possibilities to serve his country, especially with significant matchups on the horizon, such as the Euros in Germany this summer.
With England ready to play friendlies against Brazil and Belgium, followed by matches against Bosnia and Herzegovina and Iceland, Klopp’s views serve as a reminder of the need of fair selection methods and the appreciation of players’ club performances.
