Curtis Jones backed by boss Jurgen Klopp to earn England place.

The 19-year old was heavily criticised for his mistake against West Brom where he played a poor pass that led to an equaliser in the 1-1 draw with West Brom.

He was criticised by Jamie Carragher for being “sloppy”.

“He played a pass a little bit too late and everyone is talking about it but 100% you learn from things like this,” Klopp said.

“This is a very intense period for him and he’s done outstandingly so far.

“I don’t know what situation we would have been with all the injuries if he wouldn’t have been there.

“I’m really happy about everything, football players make mistakes or wrong decisions – that can happen, especially when you get tired. That was for sure the case at West Brom.

“But against Newcastle again, top game and really good player. All good.”

Klopp was questioned if Jones was ready for an England call-up to which he replied: “It is a question for Southgate. He has not been with the Under-21s for long.”

“It is not my decision but we are happy to have him and he has a chance to play in our team.

“In the future he will play for England I am sure. But this summer, I don’t know.”
