Jurgen Klopp has hailed his defensive dup of Virgil Van Dijk and Joe Gomez.

Liverpool have been on top of the league for 16 weeks now. They are playing some match winning football and looking like champions. They are going on taking out opponents in close encounters and one great area of solidarity for them in such narrow wins is their defence.

The Liverpool backline marshalled by Virgil Van Dijk has been near difficult to penetrate and break down. Their boss Klopp was quick to hail the Reds defensive duo.

“Oh, we spoke, we spoke a lot,” says Klopp as cited by the Liverpool Echo. “In a very good team, which we obviously are, the train doesn’t wait. That means other players showed up, and I don’t think anybody thought really we should put Joel [Matip] on the bench. It is just that the boys are incredibly talented.

“The boy is still young, that is not the reason – it’s just that you keep rhythm and you keep players together. But these two, Joe and Virg, they like each other a lot, and they can play sensationally well together.

“This outstanding skilled boy has this kind of improvement but he hasn’t played consistently for a while. Football-wise he’s an exceptional player, but against Watford, you could see he had to fight, and fight to keep concentrated.”
