Jurgen Klopp Hails James Milner As 'Best Player' In MK Dons Victory

Jurgen Klopp singled out Liverpool veteran, James Milner for high praise after his goal and assist pushed Reds to the third round of EFL League Cup.

The Englishman is a rare presence in Liverpool’s starting lineup these days but Klopp sees no loss in his enthusiasm.

“This man is on fire, that’s how it is,” said the Reds boss. “He helps a lot and he is a real model for the young players.

“If he could play every day, Millie would be like this every day, so that is brilliant. We could have done better in that final period but we started well as a team but then we got a bit stiff.

“We had to force the goal and then you saw Millie (score). The team lacked rhythm and experience and the player with the most rhythm and experience was the best player on the pitch. It was pretty obvious.”

Milner’s shot was poorly judged by Stuart Moore as it struck his hands and still ended up in the back of the net. The Reds debutant, Ki-Jana Hoever headed in one of Milner’s crosses to put them 2-0 past MK Dons.

“We had some very good performances, very good moments, of course,” added Klopp. “For 75 minutes, we controlled the game near perfectly and, with not a high number of possession, MK Dons did a lot of good stuff, so it was really tricky.

“To be honest, these games are there for the young players to show what they can do but, for a goalkeeper, it is quite difficult to do that in a game like this. But Caoimhin Kelleher, him being there, having not a lot to do in the whole game and then making these type of saves was absolutely brilliant. So I am happy about that.”

“It is so important that we still have these games where we are brave enough to use the boys,” he continued. “We are not here because we don’t disrespect the competition, we are here to win the game, there is no other reason. We don’t fly to London and do all that stuff and then say goodbye.

“I am really happy that we went through, that is cool. And that the boys felt adult football as well, that is really important. There were very physical situations for the offensive players especially. It wasn’t overly hard but hard challenges and they can show in moments how good they are, so all good.”
