Jurgen Klopp’s decision to bench Thiago Alcantara last weekend was questioned by Paul Merson.
Liverpool started the game with James Milner, Gini Wijnaldum and Fabinho in midfield.
Aston Villa took the lead and then the Reds had to fight back in the second half. Thiago came on to make an impact as a substitute.
“They weren’t very good Liverpool,” Merson told Soccer Saturday. “They fell over the line. There’s something missing. The clicks not happening, at the moment.
“I thought the midfield three of Wijnaldum, Milner and Fabinho, it’s not going to put the ball through the eye of a needle. I just cannot believe Thiago doesn’t play in games like this when Villa are going to sit back. It’s a surprise to me.”
Thiago arrived at Anfield with a lofty reputation. He quickly became a key element of Klopp’s midfield despite Liverpool going through poor results. He is clearly a very good distributor wiith a pass accuracy of nearly 90% this season. But overall, fans are expecting more from the Spaniard.
He is yet to register an assist for the Reds. Perhaps, that is expected of a player who features as an anchor in midfield.
