Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has said that youngsters Bobby Duncan and Paul Glatzel will receive opportunities during the upcoming pre-season friendlies.
Both Glatzel and Duncan were in great form for Liverpool’s U18 side who won the FA Youth Cup by Manchester City in the final on penalties last season.
Glatzel was the captain of the U18 team last season and scored 23 goals in 38 matches across all competitions. He was instrumental in Liverpool’s FA Youth Cup win, scoring 8 goals and providing an assist in just 6 matches during the competition.
Bobby Duncan also had a fine season in 18/19, scoring 25 goals and providing 8 assists in 41 appearances across all competitions. He scored 5 goals and registered two assists in the FA Cup. Duncan’s late equaliser in the final against Manchester City rescued Liverpool and took the match to extra-time. Duncan however, did not take a penalty during the shootout but eventually ended up with a winners medal round his neck.
With Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino just finishing off national duty while Sadio Mane is still on national duty, Klopp will need to pick some of the players from the youth team during the pre-season matches and Klopp has said he will do so
Speaking to Liverpool’s official site, Klopp said: “A lot of them will be part of the US tour, we have to use that because of the number of games we play. Only as an example, Bobby Duncan and Paul Glatzel: our offensive line that played last year is coming pretty late in joining us in the pre-season, so we have to be creative system-wise and all that stuff, but there will be moments when they have to play.
Not only at Tranmere or whatever, but in America as well when we play Borussia Dortmund and all the other guys. So, it’s good and it’s always like this: when you are already in the club, then the door is always open for you to the first team.”
Liverpool start their pre-season tonight against Tranmere Rovers at Birkenhead which is not far from Anfield.
