Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp said that the players chose Virgil van Dijk as their captain for the match against Red Star Belgrade in the absence of Jordan Henderson and James Milner.

Both Henderson and Milner missed out on the 4-0 win due to injuries and Virgil van Dijk donned the captain’s armband for the match.

Klopp said, “It was not my decision. I decided Hendo and Milly will stay, that is the 100 per cent logical thing to do. But I said the next two, the players can vote for, and now we have two Dutch guys in the role.

The team decided number three for Virgil and number four for Gini Wijnaldum. If somebody would have told me that that would have happened in my life, a German and two Dutch guys in such an important role [I would have laughed]. But yes, it was a players’ decision.”

Liverpool take on Cardiff City tomorrow in an attempt to register their 8th Premier League win out of 10 matches. Henderson will once again miss out because he is yet to recover from his hamstring injury. Hence, it seems like James Milner will captain the side against Cardiff City.
