John Barnes confident that Liverpool can handle title pressure

Liverpool legend John Barnes is confident that his former club won’t wilt under the pressure of winning the title and ending the city’s 29-year wait.

Manchester City’s loss to Newcastle United on Tuesday meant the Reds had a chance to go seven points clear at the top when they faced Leicester on Wednesday.

But Jurgen Klopp’s men couldn’t get the job done and only managed to draw against the Foxes, despite taking an early lead. As a result, they are now five points clear at the top of the league table.

Barnes though, is not concerned, and believes that Klopp will guide this team to success. Speaking to talkSport he said: “It’s not all doom and gloom.

“It was great opportunity to go seven points clear, but we’ve added another point.

“It’s only January and teams, including Liverpool and Manchester City, will drop more points. We’re not going to have another situation like last year where City went so far ahead of everybody else and didn’t drop points.

“Liverpool drawing against a struggling Leicester team, City losing to a struggling Newcastle team – this happens in the Premier League.

“So I’d rather see this as a point gained. Yes, it’s an opportunity lost to go seven clear, but we’re one point further ahead.”

Liverpool have a chance to get back to winning ways when they face West Ham at London Stadium on Monday night Football.
