Liverpool’s weakened side won in the city derby.
And it was a special game for one player.
Jurgen Klopp named a young side to play at Anfield, including Neco Williams, Nathaniel Phillips, Pedro Chirivella and it was visitors Everton who had the better share of the chances but Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Mason Holgate and Richarlison all saw efforts saved by Reds goalkeeper Adrian.
But it is Curtis Jones who will never forget 5 January 2020, for the rest of his life. The 18-year-old had only featured five times in the Liverpool first-team before he was named in the starting line-up for their FA Cup third-round clash against Everton. The local lad would have just been excited to play in such an important fixture at Anfield.
Jones said his stunning winner for Liverpool against Everton at Anfield in the FA Cup was beyond his wildest dreams as Jürgen Klopp savoured the triumph of a line-up packed with inexperienced players. Jones struck with a curler into the top corner from outside the area in the 71st minute to give Liverpool a 1-0 win and it was the youngster’s first senior goal.
Never in his wildest dreams would he have envisaged scoring an unbelievable winner and picking up the Man of the Match award in the process. But that is exactly what happened as a youthful Liverpool side beat Everton’s full-strength squad.
