Joe Gomez enjoying challenge of adapting to new role as an inverted full back

Liverpool defender Joe Gomez is now open to leaving the club as he seeks a fresh challenge in the summer transfer window, according to DailyMail Online. Gomez has struggled to cement himself as a guaranteed starter at Anfield, especially after the emergence of Jarell Quansah.

The 27-year-old has often featured as cover in multiple positions, but he’s failed to nail down a spot in the side. A story from the Daily Mail now reveals that Liverpool agreed to sell Joe Gomez to Newcastle in a £45m deal this summer. However, that is not all; it sounds like the England international was genuinely one step away from leaving Anfield.

A medical was booked for the Liverpool No. 2 in Leipzig, and The Daily Mail continues, saying that Gomez was excited about the move as he got ready to return to his preferred position as a right-sided central defender.

Joe Gomez is now open to Leaving Liverpool

As part of the deal, Newcastle gave Arne Slot the opportunity to sign Anthony Gordon for £75 million, and Liverpool agreed to the transfer as the Magpies looked for a drastic solution to their financial problems. By selling Elliot Anderson to Nottingham Forest for £35 million and Yankuba Minteh to Brighton for £33 million, Newcastle was able to raise money in the end and comply with the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR).

Liverpool would have made a whopping £41.5 million profit if Gomez had been sold to Newcastle for £45 million. The London player was signed by the Reds in June 2015 for a meager £3.5 million.
