The difference in quality between Virgil Van Dijk and any other Liverpool center back is stark.

The likes of Lovren never made the cut, while Matip is still on and off. Now the new guy from the academy, Joe Gomez seems to be making the headlines for the wrong reasons.

One guy, who did well, was their holding midfielder, Fabinho who filled in as a center back in the match against Chelsea.

Fabinho in defence gave the Reds a 2-0 clean sheet win while Gomez conceded 7 goals against Aston Villa.

Carragher now believes, Gomez could be set for the drop for Liverpool’s next match – against league leaders and Liverpool’s arch-enemy Everton.

He told Sky Sports: “I just wonder about it going forward with the performance of Gomez and the performance of Fabinho at Chelsea.

“Certainly, with Henderson to come back in, you would expect Thiago to come back in.

“For the Everton game, you wonder if it would be something they would stick with.

“Maybe take Gomez out for a couple of weeks and give him a breather. He has done brilliant for Liverpool, no doubt.

“But you just think since they came back, a few goals conceded since the restart, the Leeds game, you cannot forget about that, and here [last night].”
