1964-65 European Cup
This was Liverpool’s first ever appearance in the European Cup. In the preliminary round, Liverpool were up against Icelandic club KR. The first leg was at Reykjavik and just three minutes into the match, young striker Gordon Wallace scored Liverpool’s first ever goal in European competition. Liverpool eventually won the match 5-0 with Wallace and Roger Hunt scoring two goals each.
Liverpool won the second leg at Anfield 6-1 to qualify for the first round. In the first round, Liverpool beat Belgian club Anderlecht 4-0 on aggregate to setup a match with German club FC Koln in the quarter-finals.
Both legs against FC Koln ended in goalless draws and the tie had to be decided by a third leg. which ended 2-2 and Liverpool eventually qualified for the semi-finals through a coin toss.
In the semi-finals, Liverpool were up against Inter Milan who had the likes of Giacinto Facchetti, Sandro Mazzola, Tarcisio Burgnich and Luis Suarez (Spanish footballer) amongst others. Liverpool won the first leg at Anfield 3-1 thanks to goals from Ian Callaghan, Ian St. John and Roger Hunt. Inter’s only goal came from Sandro Mazzola.
In the second leg at San Siro, Inter Milan won 3-0 to qualify for the final. Inter eventually went on to win the final against Benfica thanks to a goal from Jair.

1966-67 European Cup
This time, Liverpool were directly into the first round. Their opponents were Romanian club Petrolul Ploiesti who are currently a second tier club.
Liverpool won the first leg 2-0 but Petrolul won the second leg 3-1 to make the scores 3-3 on aggregate. Since no away goals was there at the time, a replay was held at Brussels and Liverpool won 2-0 to advance to the second round.
In the second round, Liverpool were up against Ajax. Ajax thrashed Liverpool 5-1 in the first leg while Liverpool drew the second leg at Anfield 2-2. Ajax won 7-3 on aggregate and were out of the competition. Ajax eventually exited in the quarter-finals against Dukla Prague.

1973-74 European Cup
Liverpool’s opponents in the first round was Luxembourg club Jeunesse Esch. The first leg at Luxembourg ended in a 1-1 draw as Gilbert Dussier’s late goal cancelled out Brian Hall’s opening goal.
Liverpool won the second leg at Anfield 2-0 thanks to an own goal from Leon Mond and a goal from John Toshack. Liverpool won 3-1 at Anfield and advanced to the second round where they were drawn against Red Star Belgrade.
Red Star won the first leg at Belgrade 2-1 and won the second leg at Anfield by the same scoreline. This was the first defeat Liverpool faced at Anfield in the European Cup.
Liverpool lost 2-4 on aggregate and were out of the competition. Red Star Belgrade lost in the quarter-finals to eventual runners-up Atletico Madrid.

1976-77 European Cup
Liverpool’s first round opponent were Northern Irish club Crusaders. The Reds won the home leg at Anfield 2-0 thanks to goals from Phil Neal and John Toshack. They won the second leg 5-0 thanks to a brace from David Johnson and goals from Steve Heighway, Kevin Keegan and Terry McDermott. Liverpool won 7-0 on aggregate and went through to Round 2 where they were up against Turkish club Trabzonspor.
Trabzonspor won the first leg 1-0 thanks to a penalty from Cemil Usta. However, Liverpool bounced back in the second leg at Anfield 3-0 thanks to goals from Steve Heighway, David Johnson and Kevin Keegan. The win gave Liverpool a 3-1 aggregate win and they advanced to the quarter-finals.
In the quarters, Liverpool were up against Saint-Etienne. Like the previous round, Liverpool lost the first leg in France 1-0 with midfielder Dominique Bathenay scoring the winner. In the second leg at Anfield, Liverpool opened the scoring after just two minutes thanks to Kevin Keegan. However, Bathenay equalised for Saint-Etienne just 5 minutes into the second half before goals from Ray Kennedy and Ray Fairclough took Liverpool to the semi-finals.
In the semis, Liverpool were up against Zurich and won the first leg 3-1 at Zurich. The Reds triumphed 3-0 at Anfield to reach their first European Cup final.
In the final, Borussia Monchengladbach awaited Liverpool at the Stadio olimpico in Rome. Terry McDermott put Liverpool ahead before Allan Simonsen equalised for Monchengladbach. However, two goals from Tommy Smith and Phil Neal won Liverpool their maiden European Cup.
