The attacking midfielder will stay at Lyon next season
Despite a positive campaign last season, Jurgen Klopp is keen to make new signings this summer in order to strengthen the squad for next season. Liverpool Chairman Tom Werner admitted that the manager will be given transfer funds to add reinforcements in the transfer window.
The Reds have already completed the signing of Fabinho from Monaco and RB Leipzig’s midfielder Naby Keita will join them this month.
The Premier League giants have been linked with a move for Lyon Star Nabil Fekir for a long time and Klopp is keen too make him their next signing.
Fekir has spent his entire professional career at the French club and made his senior debut for them back in 2013. He has been an integral part of the team since then and has established himself as one of the best playmakers in the world.
The France International has enjoyed a stellar campaign this season, scoring 23 goals and assisting 9 in 40 appearances in all competitions and helping the team to qualify for Champions League next season. His form has attracted attention from many clubs across the Europe including the Reds.
It is believed that the German coach has already met with him in order to convince him to move to England and the club were in talks over a £60 million transfer deal with Lyon. Though the Ligue 1 club insisted that the deal was not in works but the midfielder seemed Anfield bound when French FA president Noel Le Graet said he had completed a medical at the national team’s facilities.
But the French club have confirmed that their star will not go anywhere this summer and will stay at the club next season after a breakdown in negotiations with Liverpool.
“Olympique Lyonnais informs that the negotiations with Liverpool and Nabil Fekir for the transfer of the captain of OL have not succeeded and that Olympique Lyonnais has decided to put an end to negotiations tonight at 20:00,” a statement read as quoted by Goal.
Lyon’s statement added: “Although Liverpool made the possible transfer of Nabil a priority, and [we have been] subject to other proposals consistent with the interests of Nabil and OL from ambitious clubs,
“Olympique Lyonnais is delighted soon to be able to count on the presence of our captain, who is a leading player for this 2018-19 season, during which the club will play the Champions League as a third seed.”
