Liverpool have reportedly plunged into the transfer market to sign Sporting Lisbon centre‑back Ousmane Diomande as a long‑term partner for Virgil van Dijk.

Reds in £68M Race for Portugal’s Rising Star

With the Reds keen to steady their defence ahead of next season, Diomande—just 21—has emerged as a prime target.

Fresh from an impressive season in Portugal, Diomande helped Sporting secure a league-and-cup double, featuring in 46 games across all competitions.

Standing at 1.90 m, the Ivorian combines aerial strength with ball-playing precision, a combination that has attracted admiration from Anfield sources.

According to reports, Sporting have slapped a €80 million (£68 million) release clause in his contract, though sources suggest Liverpool may look to strike a deal closer to €60 million.

The Reds’ interest in Diomande is part of a broader strategy: while Arne Slot’s side boasts solidity through van Dijk, Joe Gomez, and Jarell Quansah, the future remains uncertain—Matip’s contract is ending, and Joel Matip himself could depart.

At just 21, Diomande offers a perfect blend of youth, physicality, and tactical maturity—he’s calm under pressure and comfortable in possession, traits Liverpool value highly.

Liverpool aren’t alone in the race. Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester United, and even Bayern Munich have kept close tabs on the defender.

For instance, Bayern’s sporting director reportedly scouted Diomande through the season, signaling serious intent.

Arsenal and Chelsea have watched him closely, but Sporting are understood to hold firm on their valuation .

On another front, Liverpool are also weighing up a move for Rennes’ 19-year-old Moroccan centre-back Abdelhamid Aït Boudlal. Featuring in France’s Ligue 2 at Amiens, he’s already drawn praise for his defensive intelligence and composure.

With the summer window fast approaching, Liverpool are clearly intent on reinforcing their rearguard—and Diomande could well be the next big signing to walk through Anfield’s doors.
