5 Liverpool FC players with most appearances for the club
1. Ian Callaghan – Liverpool FC players with most appearances for the club
One of Liverpool’s most famous players, he played for the club for 18 years. He made 857 appearances for the club. He broke into the team under the legendary manager Bill Shankly. His period of play was from 1960 to 1978.
He helped the club gain promotion to the first division in 1962 and then went on to help them win five league titles in that division in the next 15 years. He also reached two FA Cup finals and multiple European cups.
He was also a member of the English World Cup-winning team of 1966 but did not get a medal since he did not play in most of the matches. He left Liverpool for Swansea down south and helped them gain promotion as well.
He later went on to play in the United States of America, Australia and Ireland. He retired soon after at the age of 40. He was a midfielder and ended up with 50 goals for the Reds.
2. Jamie Carragher – Liverpool FC players with most appearances for the club
He is the club’s second longest-serving player. He was a one-man club as he spent seventeen years at Liverpool, ten of those as vice-captain to Steven Gerrard. He was a centre back by trade but was often asked to play as a right-back as well due to his defensive versatility.
He went on to make 737 appearances for Liverpool and holds the record for most European appearances numbering 150. He came through the Liverpool academy making his debut in 1997. He was initially a wing-back but the arrival of Rafa Benitez as Liverpool coach in 2004 saw the defender move places to centre back.
He has won 11 trophies with Liverpool, including the famous Champions League win of 2005. Ironically he had the most appearances for England as an under 21 international but his senior career for the Three Lions had too many pauses due to the presence and development of John Terry and Rio Ferdinand at centre back who were preferred ahead of Carragher.
He retired in 2010 for a second time and now works as a pundit for Sky Sports.
3. Steven Gerrard – Liverpool FC players with most appearances for the club
The Liverpool legend, the one-club man and possibly one of Liverpool’s finest players ever. Gerrard started his Liverpool career as a winger who would flash up and down full of pace and delivery.
However, it was soon realised that he possessed a great shot in him and with his vision and ability to tackle as well he would be an ideal number 8 player. There was no looking back for Stevie G after that.
He went on to help Liverpool win their most famous Champions League in that magical night in Istanbul. He was approached by Chelsea and Real Madrid but the loyalty in Gerrard shook away all those offers.
He had a knack for finding the back of the net from outside the box and it made him one of the best long-range scorers in world football. Gerrard finished third in the 2005-06 Ballon d’Or winner race behind winner Ronaldinho and second-place Frank Lampard.
He also captained England for a long time after the retirement of John Terry from international football. He made a total of 710 appearances for Liverpool.
4. Ray Clemence – Liverpool FC players with most appearances for the club
Raymond Neal or Ray Clemence is a part of a special club of footballers to have made over 1000 appearances in football. Out of that, 665 came for Liverpool when he was a part of the Reds’ team in the 1970s.
Clemence made 48 appearances for Scunthorpe United before Bill Shankly at Liverpool signed him up for the Reds. The legendary goalkeeper went on to make over 660 appearances and win three European titles as a part of that Liverpool dream team before he switched clubs.
He joined Tottenham Hotspur in 1981. He played for England as well for over 13 years attaining a record 125 caps for his country. In the early 1980s, the arrival of Peter Shilton in goal, meant that Clemence’s position was under threat at the national camp and he ended up being phased out by Shilton, the young rival.
5. Emlyn Hughes – Liverpool FC players with most appearances for the club
He joined the club in 1967 and played for them till 1979. He made 665 appearances as well, some as a defender and some as a midfielder. He won league titles, domestic cups and European trophies for the Reds. Watch & Bet Football Here =>
