Liverpool Interested In Timo Werner But Only For Backup Role

According to Bleacher Report, Liverpool are interested in signing RB Leipzig forward, Timo Werner.

Jurgen Klopp wants to strengthen forward line and not be so heavily dependant on the trio of Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane to win him games.

Liverpool are currently struggling to rotate their attacking players with Xherdan Shaqiri out injured. Divock Origi, Adam Lallana and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain have filled in when required but the latter two are more central figures.

Werner has been in top form this season, scoring 11 goals in 11 Bundesliga appearances. He is still only 23 years old and has the potential to join the school of elites in Europe. The German forward understandably will have to take up a backup role if he were to opt for a Liverpool move.

The Reds can promise him riches in terms of trophies but an immediate starting role will be tough to guarantee. Liverpool could also have acquired Werner for cheap earlier but he recently signed a contract extension with Leipzig till June 2023.

His sale would drive out an astronomical price and there is little evidence that suggests Liverpool will pay that much for a backup option. If they did, they truly would be joining the likes of Manchester City in overflowing riches. Overall, it is a good option for the Reds to pursue.
