Liverpool is the most successful English club in European competitions. The Reds have won 13 European trophies: the UEFA Champions League six times, the UEFA Europa League three times, and the UEFA Super Cup four times. Liverpool won their first Champions League in 1977(earlier known as the European Cup). Here we take a look at the Liverpool players with most Champions League appearances.

Most Champions League appearances by a Liverpool player:

1.Jamie Carragher – 91 appearances

The former Reds defender spent 17 years at Liverpool and is the club’s 2nd-longest ever serving player in all competitions. He holds the record for the most appearances in UCL for Liverpool with 91.

2. Steven Gerrard – 86 appearances

Steven Gerrard led Liverpool to a historic fifth European title, scoring a crucial late goal in the group stages, and was named Man of the Match as he Liverpool came from 3–0 down to defeat Milan in what became known as the ‘Miracle of Istanbul’. He has 86 UCL appearances for Liverpool.

3. John Arne Riise – 68 appearances

Riise spent seven years playing for Liverpool, in which he won many honours, including the 2004–05 UEFA Champions League. Despite playing just 7 years, he is third in the list of most UCL appearances.

4. Sami Hyypia – 67 appearances

Sami Hyypia spent 10 seasons at Anfield and was the part of Liverpool squad that won the UCL at Istanbul. He managed 67 UCL appearances over the year at Liverpool.

5. Pepe Reina – 56 appearances

Pepe Reina joined Liverpool and made his debut in the 2005 UEFA Super Cup, which Liverpool won. In 2007, he reached the Champions League Final with Liverpool, but Liverpool lost to Milan. He managed 56 UCL appearances in the 8 seasons he spent at Liverpool.

6. Xabi Alonso – 47 appearances

Xabi Alonso joined Liverpool in 2004 and won the Champions League in his first season. He spent five seasons at Anfield and managed 47 UCL appearances with the Reds.

7. Steve Finnan – 44 appearances

Steve Finnan is the only player to have played in the World Cup, UEFA Champions League, UEFA Cup, Intertoto Cup, all four levels of the English league football and the Football Conference. He won the 2005 Champions League with Liverpool and spent 5 seasons with the Reds. He is 7th in the list of most appearances by a Liverpool player.

8. Dirk Kuyt – 40 appearances

Dirk Kuyt joined the Reds in 2006 and made his Premier League debut late in 2006. He became part of the first-team squad and scored in his first-ever UEFA Champions League final with Liverpool against Milan.

9. Dietmar Hamann – 37 appearances

The German midfielder spent 7 seasons with Liverpool and was crucial in Liverpool’s 2005 European glory. He went on to manage 37 UCL appearances before joining Manchester City in 2006.

10. Luis Garcia – 31 appearances

Luis Garcia joined Liverpool in 2004 and won the 2005 UCL with the Reds. He was a key player in Liverpool’s successful campaign in the UEFA Champions League, scoring winning goals against Juventus and Chelsea.
