According to reports in England, Liverpool will not make a move to sign Ajax captain Matthijs de Ligt this summer. De Ligt has established himself as one of the most talented young footballers in the world.
The teenager captained his side to a domestic double and to their first ever Champions League semi-final in more than 20 years. De Ligt has scored 7 goals and has managed 4 assists in 55 appearances across all competitions.
His performances have drawn interest from many top clubs. Even though Barcelona are heavy favorites to land him in the summer, Liverpool is also strongly linked to the Dutch defender. Not long back, De Ligt himself said that a move to Liverpool is possible.
However, Liverpool have withdrawn any interest for the defender. Liverpool already have one of the best defenders in the world Virgil van Dijk marshalling their defence. In Joel Matip, Joe Gomez and Dejan Lovren, Liverpool have three efficient defenders who can partner van Dijk. Besides, de Ligt may need time to adapt to the Premier League. Hence, there is every chance that de Ligt won’t be a starter for Liverpool. So, paying £61 million for someone who may well end up on the bench is something Liverpool are not willing to do.
