Liverpool is a professional football club located in Liverpool, England. They compete in the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup and League Cup during a competitive season. They are regarded as the second most successful club in the country, behind Manchester United in terms of domestic trophies.

They have so far won 6 European Cups, more than any other English club, 3 UEFA Cups, 4 UEFA Super Cups, 18 League titles, 7 FA Cups, a record 8 League Cups and 15 FA Community Shields.

Now, we have seen plenty of Liverpool players leaving Anfield over the recent years. Some of their transfer agreements have been modified with buy-back clauses due to the potential they still carry as professionals. Among them, it is hard to tell who will one day return to Liverpool but here are the top 5 Liverpool players sold with buy-back clause –

5. Tom Ince – Liverpool Players Sold With Buy-Back Clause

Remember Paul Ince? The once-great Premier League striker who managed to infuriate fans of both Liverpool and Manchester United when he switched his allegiance in 1997? Well, this is his son, Tom Ince, who is a product of the Reds Academy and was once a highly promising prospect.

He is now playing in the Championship for Stoke City but believes that he was robbed of his chance to shine for Liverpool.

“If you are a young player waiting for a chance at a top club, what do you do?” Ince said. “Stay in the top facility, enjoying all the best travel, wearing all the best sports gear? Or do you say I am going to be brave and step away even if that means going to League One or the Championship?

“My dream was to play at Anfield but I could not waste time feeling my way was blocked. You have to take decisions and do what is best for your career.

“I did not want to leave.

“I was training with the first team. But I needed to go and show what I was about.

Ince had made just one senior appearance for Liverpool before he was sent out on loan to Blackpool. His form for the Tangerines had caught the eye of Brendan Rodgers, who wanted to bring the winger back to Anfield. Unfortunately, for Ince, it was a buy-back clause included in his deal that scuppered the entire transfer.

“I had been to Notts County on loan and that was the eye-opener. It was League One, but it was the atmosphere and feeling of playing against grown men who are doing this because it is their life, to put food on the table.”

“Liverpool was very close but the Blackpool chairman did not want to be out of pocket because Liverpool owned a percentage of the sell-on fee,” Ince told the Telegraph. “He made it difficult and they would not let me go. That was disappointing because I felt I would have been given a chance under Brendan Rodgers.”

4. Brad Smith – Liverpool Players Sold With Buy-Back Clause

Brad Smith

Brad Smith along with Jordan Ibe was sold to AFC Bournemouth in 2016 for a combined fee of £21m. Now, he has not progressed as one would have hoped, being loaned further out to Seatle Seahawks in the MLS but Liverpool held the left-back in high regard earlier.

Ibe has also fizzled out in recent years but Klopp maintained a positive stance during the player’s sale. He told Liverpool Echo, “At that age you have to play and that was the case with Brad Smith and Jordon Ibe.

“They had the possibility to do that [with Bournemouth] and they were deals that absolutely made sense for both sides.

“We will watch them, they will have pressure there, they will fight for the league or whatever, and we will see them growing up in pressure situations. That’s perfect.

“If a player is on loan it’s different. It’s like going on holiday. You can always go home,” he added. “That’s difficult for these guys as they are always between clubs.

“Now Smith and Ibe are there and we have buy-back clauses. Hopefully, they do really well and then, in the end, we and them will decide. The goodbyes were okay with both of them. Liverpool is still in their hearts so we will have a chance if they do well.”

2. Ryan Kent – Liverpool Players Sold With Buy-Back Clause

Ryan Kent was one of the most promising youth players to come out of the Liverpool Academy in recent years but with the star power in the first team it was always going to be hard to make a breakthrough.

Finally, after spending one rewarding season on loan to Rangers FC, Kent completed a £7m transfer to the Scottish outfit this summer, to train and improve under the stewardship of Reds legend, Steven Gerrard.

Now, Kent’s value is expected to rise significantly in the coming years because of which Liverpool have added a buy-back clause and also a 20% sell-on clause. Could Gerard one day return to Anfield as manager and recall one of his star athletes?

1. Philippe Coutinho – Liverpool Players Sold With Buy-Back Clause

Liverpool Fotballers Who Can Be Brought Back Coutinho

Philippe Coutinho’s record move to Barcelona for £140m was the centre of heavy debate among Liverpool fans but its the critics who are laughing now after 18 whole months.

The Brazilian fell out at Nou Camp and is now, playing for Bayern Munich while on loan from Barcelona. His departure had left a huge gap at Anfield but with shrewd reinvestment, Jurgen Klopp has managed to completely coast past Coutinho’s absence to win the Merseyside outfit their sixth Champions League trophy.

After an initial 12 months at Barcelona, many had projected that Coutinho would end up back with Liverpool. He was heavily linked with a return this summer as well but Klopp came out and revealed that the Reds simply did not have the funds to participate in that transfer.

Questions were raised on whether a buy-back clause was included in the 27-year-old’s sale in the first place but it seems like Barcelona never agreed to anything of that sort. One clause which was included was that the La Liga champions will have to pay a premium of £89m (€100m) for any Liverpool player they wished to purchase before 2020.

That seemed like a genius move to block all of the Blaugrana’s interest towards the Liverpool stars, especially after the 4-0 drubbing they took in the Champions League semi-finals last season. Players like Trent Alexander-Arnold, Roberto Firmino, Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane are currently in high demand but Liverpool can rest easy, knowing Barcelona won’t be troubling them any time soon.
