According to reports, Liverpool are ready to lodge an official bid to sign Philip Max from Augsburg. The Merseysiders want a back-up for in-form Scottish captain Andy Robertson, who is the first-choice left-back at Anfield.

Klopp intends to give the 25-year-old a harder run for his position and wants to add competition in the department.

Philip Max came through the youth setup at Bayern Munich before making his professional debut with FC Schalke. Now with Augsburg, the 25-year-old is a key figure in their setup.

Max scored four goals and assisted seven last season, also playing in an advanced left-wing role. The German could be available for as little as £18m.

However, Liverpool will not find it easy to sign him as Spanish giants Barcelona are also said to be interested in his signature. The Blaugrana want to strengthen their left side and add competition for first-choice left-back Jordi Alba.

However, Barcelona may also make a move for Jerome Roussillon from Wolfsburg as an alternative for the £30m rated Junior Firpo of Real Betis.

Reports also say that the Catalans have contacted Tottenham’s Danny Rose, albeit Philip Max remains the preferred choice on the shortlist.
