Liverpool Set To Lose £35m From Philippe Coutinho's Transfer

The latest reports claim that Liverpool could lose £35m in the transaction for Philippe Coutinho to Barcelona.

Liverpool sold the Brazilian for £142m in January 2018 but the entire sum was never guaranteed.

Jurgen Klopp very quickly reinvested those funds to bring in Virgil van Dijk from Southampton and Alisson Becker from AS Roma. Unfortunately, Liverpool could suffer a significant loss in the grand scheme of things. Coutinho’s transfer fees was rounded up including a lot of performance bonuses.

However, the 27-year-old failed to meet expectations at Camp Nou and could depart very soon for the Premier League. Chances of him returning to Liverpool are quite low with teams like Chelsea, Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur the front runners in the race.

Jamie Carragher had previously scoffed at what Barcelona paid for Coutinho, stating that he was not worth that much. While many disagreed with him, the former Reds player might have been true. Nevertheless, all credits to Liverpool for raising such a huge sum from the Brazilian’s sale. A £35m cut off could be detrimental in the current scenario even if Liverpool are in a good financial position.

To put things into perspective, Sadio Mane arrived at the club for £35m and he finished fourth in the Balon d’Or rankings last year. The Reds will be looking to recruit more quality players like the Senegal international.
