Liverpool sign young French defender Billy Koumetio
Premier League leaders Liverpool have agreed to sign young French defender Billy Koumetio from US Orleans Loiret, Daily Mail reports.
The 16-year-old prodigy arrived in England earlier this week to complete the deal.
Koumetio, who played for Lyon before moving to Orleans Loiret at the age of 11, had a trial with Liverpool in November.
The Reds are focusing on bolstering their Academy ranks in order to secure their future in terms of producing fantastic talents who can first-team football on a regular basis.
Liverpool’s U-23 currently sit fifth in Premier League 2 while the youth team lead the Premier League U-18s.
Koumetio, a left-sided defender, is the latest arrival amidst a string of purchases made by the Merseyside-based club to improve their youth ranks.
While the Frenchman is another signing in the junior level, the senior team is not expected to make any new signings during this month’s transfer window.
We know Jurgen Klopp is a type of manager who will give opportunities to young players to prove themselves and become a regular starter in the team. Joe Gomez and Trent Alexander-Arnold being ideal examples.
He gave a chance to 17-year-old centre-back Ki Jana Hoever to play a huge chunk of FA Cup third round tie away at Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Two more Academy players Rafa Camacho and Curtis Jones featured in that game.
Hence, if Koumetio takes his chance with both hands and attract the interest of the first-team manager, he may well get some game time in the future before he becomes 18.
