Liverpool Take 'Poor' Decision To Put Out-Of-Workers On Furlough - Jamie Carragher

Jamie Carragher has questioned Liverpool’s decision to put some out-of-work staff on government’s furlough scheme.

The Reds will be privy to simply paying 20% of the worker’s salary while the British government shoulders the other 80%, ensuring everyone receives a full salary during the Coronavirus pandemic.

“Liverpool FC has placed some staff who are impacted by the Premier League suspension on furlough,” a statement reads. “The club has confirmed those staff will be paid 100 per cent of their salaries to ensure no member of staff is financially disadvantaged. Last month the club also confirmed that it would pay its matchday and non-matchday staff while the Premier League is suspended.”

Liverpool are not the first club to face the brunt of criticism. Tottenham, Norwich, Bournemouth and Newcastle – all have taken up this option. Using tax payer’s money to pay workers even when the majority of these clubs have excess of wealth in the coffers has not sat right with former players.

Carragher believes that Liverpool will lose respect and goodwill for this as the Premier League continues to face the height of uncertainties. The Reds still need six points to establish themselves as the league winners, having already secured a 22-point lead over Manchester City.
